Background and Objective

This is the third course in the series on Redefining Cultural Identities. The course held in 2000 was devoted to The Multicultural Contexts of the Central European and Mediterranean Regions. The course held in 2001 dealt with the Redefinition of Cultural Identities in Southeastern Europe. The third course is planned to concentrate on cultural industries, aspects of technological convergence and their influence on cultural consumption and cultural identities in the Southeastern European and Central European countries in transition.

The objective of the course is to give an analytical insight into the development of cultural industries, marketing and consumption of their products, and use of related technologies. Possible influences on the process of redefining of cultural identities in the Central and Southeast European post-socialist societies will be pointed out.

Course Programme

The programme of the course combines lectures and seminars and covers the following topics:

  • Cultural Industries in a Transitional Context (Jirina Šmejkalova)
  • Technoaesthetics (Miodrag Šuvaković)
  • Cyberculture and Identities: Net Artist in Between, or Breaking the Borders (Milena Dragičević Šešić)
  • Youth and Popular Culture: The New Age of Consumerism in Hungary (Laszlo Kurti)
  • New Trends in the Trade of Cultural Goods and Services: Consequences for the Preservation of Cultural Diversity (Nina Obuljen)
  • Cultural Diversity in the Emergence of Information Society (Joseph Langer)
  • Interactive Workshop on Croatian Indentity (Stijepo Martinović)
