1.   SECOND WORLD CULTURELINK CONFERENCE, ZAGREB, CROATIA, 9-12 JUNE 2005

The Culturelink Network announces the Second World Culturelink Conference entitled Dynamics of Communication: New Ways and New Actors, to be held in Zagreb, Croatia, on 9-12 June 2005. The conference is organised with the aim to examine new ways, new instruments and new actors in cultural communications, and discuss aspects of international mobility, primarily based on networking and information exchange. Abstracts should be received no later than 30 April 2005. >>>

2.   LAW AND CULTURE FELLOWSHIP

The Centre for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia University (CSLC) invites applications for residential fellowships for the 2005/06 academic year. Fellowships are available to senior graduate students and post-doctoral candidates. The CSLC welcomes scholars who are interested in working on research at the intersections of law and culture. Application deadline is 14 February 2005. >>>

3.   DEVELOPMENT GATEWAY AWARD

The Development Gateway Foundation is seeking nominations for the second Development Gateway Award. The $ 100,000 award will recognise outstanding achievements in using information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve people's lives in developing countries. Application deadline is 28 February 2005. >>>

4.   PLATEAUX ARTIST PRODUCTION RESIDENCIES

Aiming to commission a limited number of productions, the Plateaux project, jointly conducted by the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and the Deutsche Bank Cultural Foundation, invites international artists in the field of experimental theatre, performance art and live art to send in conceptual proposals. Selected artists will receive production residencies of up to 6 weeks starting in September 2005. The final productions will be presented during the Plateaux Festival on 3-13 November 2005. Application deadline is 1 March 2005. >>>

5.   31st ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL THEORY, POLITICS AND THE ARTS (STP&A)

The 31st Annual Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts (STP&A), devoted to cultural development, will be held at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on 6-8 October 2005. STP&A is an international and inter-disciplinary gathering of researchers, policy makers and practitioners that highlights current and conceptual issues in the development of cultural policy, theory, and arts administration practices in the U.S. and abroad. The deadline for paper proposals is 15 March 2005. >>>

6.   APPOINTMENT OF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2006

The National Arts Council and National Heritage Board of Singapore are organising Singapore's first visual arts biennale between September and November 2006, and are thus inviting interested candidates from the field of culture to apply for the position of the Biennale's Artistic Director. Upon the submission of conceptual frameworks, short listed candidates will be invited to Singapore to further develop their proposals. Selection and appointment of the successful candidate will take place by end March 2005. >>>

7.   TEXTILE ART/DESIGN OF TOMORROW

The European Textile Network (ETN) organizes its 13th conference entitled Visions in Textiles – From Tradition to Textile Art/Design of Tomorrow in Izmir, Turkey, on 15-17 September 2005. An International Textile Art Exhibition will be held simultaneously at the Izmir State Art and Sculpture Museum. The selection is open to artists worldwide, participation is free. Application deadline is
2 May 2005. >>>

8.   ASIA-PACIFIC CREATIVE COMMUNITIES - A STRATEGY FOR THE 21st CENTURY

The Asia-Pacific Regional Office of UNESCO in Bangkok, Thailand, announces a Senior Expert Symposium on Cultural Industries entitled Asia-Pacific Creative Communities – A Strategy for the 21st Century, to be held in Jodhpur, India, on 22-26 February 2005, aiming to outline a comprehensive policy framework for cultural industry development as a strategy for poverty reduction and social development. >>>

9.   IMPROVISATION & SPONTANEITY IN PERFORMING ARTS

International University Global Theatre Experience (IUGTE) announces the International Director's Laboratory “Improvisation & Spontaneity in Performing Arts”, to be held in Malpils, Latvia, on 15-19 March 2005. This intensive practical training represents an excellent opportunity for directors and choreographers to develop new creative inspiration during the practical work with colleagues from different countries. Participation registration should be received before 25 February 2005. >>>

10.   AMSTERDAM MEETING OF CULTURAL NETWORKS REPRESENTATIVES

The Audiences Europe Network will hold a meeting in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on 8 March 2005, hosted by the Nederlands Uitburo (NUB) with the purpose of bringing together representatives from different networks to identify shared activities and areas of interest. >>>

11.   INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF TRANSLATORS (FIT) WORLD CONGRESS

The XVII International Federation of Translators (FIT) World Congress will be held in Tampere, Finland, on 4-7 August 2005. Held every third year, FIT congresses are the only major international forum gathering translating and interpreting professionals from around the world to discuss issues of topical interest and to exchange experiences. >>>

12.   THE BEST IN HERITAGE 2005

The Best in Heritage 2005 presentation meeting will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on 22-24 September 2005. This international annual presentation of the best, awarded museums, heritage and conservation projects takes place under the patronage of ICOM, UNESCO, ICOMOS, Europa Nostra, and the City of Dubrovnik. Application deadline is 31 August 2005. >>>

13.   CULTURE.INFO, CULTURAL CONFERENCES RESOURCE

Free access to information on the arts, entertainment, heritage, leisure activities and sport is available at the Culture.Info website, which includes a comprehensive listing of culture-related conferences planned around the world through November 2005. A detailed search based on cultural theme, location, etc. is possible, and relevant events may be added to the list. www.culture.info

14.   GHANA: NATIONAL COMMISSION ON CULTURE (NCC) LAUNCHES WEBSITE

The National Commission on Culture (NCC) launched a website aimed at providing knowledge on Ghana's culture and cultural heritage in textual and audio-visual mode. www.ghanaculture.gov.gh

New Publications

15.   HOW THE UNITED STATES FUNDS THE ARTS

Issued by the National Endowment for the Arts, this publication available online presents the ever changing system of arts philanthropy in the United States. In contrast to the European models, the U.S. system of arts support is complex, decentralized, diverse, and dynamic. It combines federal, state, and local government support with private subvention from individuals, corporations, and foundations as well as box office receipts. www.arts.gov/pub/how.pdf

16.   NATIONAL ARTS COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT FY 2003/04

The National Arts Council, Singapore, has released its Annual Report FY 2003/04 under the theme of Arts for All, All for Arts. The report is available online at www.nac.gov.sg/corporate_chairmans_01.html

17.   NEW MEDIA ARTS AND CULTURE

The ARSIS quarterly magazine no. 3/04 has just been published by the Arts Council of Finland and is available online. 18.   FESTIVALS AND TOURISM: MARKETING, MANAGEMENT AND EVALUATION
