Calls for Postgraduate Studies and Research

1.   FINE ARTS POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMME

The Geneva School of Fine Arts of the University of Visual Arts offers three 4-semester postgraduate studies programmes: Art, Landscape, Place, Art and the Public Space (ALPes); Critical, Curatorial, Cybermedia (CCC); and Immédiat, Arts and Media. Courses begin 18 September 2006, application deadline is 24 March 2006. >>>

2.   FINE ART, DESIGN, THEORY

Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit research and production proposals to become a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Candidates can apply for a department or a collective one- or two-year research project, application deadline is 15 April 2006. >>>

3.   CENTRE FOR CULTURAL POLICY RESEARCH PHD STUDENTSHIP

The Centre for Cultural Policy Research of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow is awarding one fully funded PhD studentship, commencing 1 October 2006, to carry out research on the topic Flagship Festival: An Investigation into the Edinburgh International Festival's Leadership Role Locally, Nationally and Internationally'. Closing date for applications is 12 May 2006. >>>

4.   MA IN CULTURAL POLICY AND MANAGEMENT

The University of Arts in Belgrade, the Université Lyon and the Institut d'Etudes de Grenoble (Université Pierre Mendes-France), have developed a joint postgraduate programme held in English and French and offering numerous courses ranging from Cultural Policy to Arts Management and Marketing. The main application deadline is 1 June 2006. >>>

5.   LONDON CONSORTIUM POSTGRADUATE COURSES

The London Consortium offers unique multi-disciplinary postgraduate courses in the humanities and cultural studies. Applications for the October 2006 entry to one-year Master of Research and four-year PhD programmes are accepted through 30 June 2006. >>>

6.   WORLD CULTURES YEARBOOK ASSOCIATE EDITOR

The World Cultures Yearbook is looking for a scholar from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, or the Middle East to join the core Editorial Team in developing content relevant to the non-Western World, involving scholars and experts from a greater diversity of regions and backgrounds, and contributing to the Yearbook’s international presence, visibility and impact. The initial appointment is for one year, beginning 30 March 2006. >>>

7.   PLOTKI ONLINE EDITORS

Bringing together writers, photographers and graphic artists from Central and Eastern Europe in order to create a magazine that investigates the cultural sphere, the PLOTKI magazine is looking for online editors from East European countries with the aim to re-launch the PLOTKI online news called “monthly updated rumours”. 8.   ART AND POLITICS: CASE STUDIES FROM EASTERN EUROPE

The Art Institute of the Vytautas Magnus University, invites abstracts to this conference to be held in Kaunas, Lithuania, on 26-27 October 2006, aiming to bring together case studies on art and politics to analyze the complex relationship between artistic and political regimes and political meanings of art in Soviet and Post-Soviet conditions. Submission deadline is 20 April 2006. >>>

9.   THE ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF CULTURE AND ART

The Art and Sport Supporting NGO organizes its 1st International Conference entitled The Role and Significance of Culture and Art in Strengthening and Development of Cooperation Among Nations, to be held in Yeravan, Armenia on 16-19 October 2006. 10.   CULTURAL POLICY RESEARCH AWARD

Young scholars, researchers and policymakers aged 35 or under are eligible for the European Cultural Foundation's 10.000 EUR Cultural Policy Research Award (CPR Award) for applied comparative cultural policy research focusing on contemporary European cultural issues and challenges. Applications must be submitted online by 1 April 2006. >>>

11.   ART MOVES AFRICA (AMA) MOBILITY FUND

Art Moves Africa (AMA), the mobility fund for artists and cultural operators within the African continent is launching a special call for applications for projects taking place during May and June 2006. The deadline for applications is 1 April 2006. >>>

12.   UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR'S FUND

Established by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State with the aim of assisting less-developed countries in preserving their cultural heritage, the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation is currently accepting applications for financial support for projects such as archaeological site preservation, historic building restoration, museum collection conservation, manuscript stabilization and digitization, and documentation of traditional forms of expression. >>>

13.   THE POLITICS OF ARTS & CULTURE

This Feature Workshop to deal with international perspectives will be held in New York at the end of May and beginning of June 2006 with flexible credit and non-credit options. On-line registration for non-credit students is now available, credit registration begins on 17 April 2006. >>>

14.   XII ADVANCED COURSE IN VISUAL ARTS

The Fondazione Antonio Ratti offers an intensive specialization course for young international artists to take place in Como, Italy from 3 to 22 July 2006. 20 selected participants of the XII Advanced Course in Visual Arts (CSAV) will be involved in daily workshop activities and in-depth theoretical studies with distinguished experts of the international art scene. Enrolment deadline 31 March 2006. >>>

15.   EUROPEAN ATELIER FOR YOUNG FESTIVAL MANAGERS

The European Festival Association (EFA) is launching this training programme for emerging festival operators, designed for those working in the programming department or those who have the ambition to enrol a function in the artistic department of a festival. The first edition will take place in Görlitz, Germany, on 15-21 May 2006. Application deadline is 3 April 2006. >>>

16.   COLLEGE FOR NEW EUROPE SUMMER SESSIONS

The International Cultural Centre will organise the 16th edition of its summer programmes to be held in Cracow, Poland on 10-28 July 2006, aiming to bring together young students and scholars to discuss political, cultural and social issues. Application deadline is 30 April 2006. >>>

17.   EUROPOS PARKAS OPEN-AIR MUSEUM CALL FOR SCULPTURES

Europos Parkas, the open-air art museum of Vilnius, Lithuania, calls for participation in a competition to develop a sculpture on the theme of Light, Electricity, Energy. The submission deadline for project proposals is 30 April 2006. >>>

18.   OLYMPIA SUMMER SEMINARS 2006

The fifth annual Olympia Summer Seminars will be held in Ancient Olympia, Greece from 26 June to 10 July 2006, aiming to facilitate an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to the study of current and historical events by bringing together eminent scholars and highly qualified students and professionals from around the world. Sessions include: War, Conflict & Identity and The Challenges of International Media Technology and Policy. Applications deadline is 8 May 2006. >>>

19.   INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CURATING NEW MEDIA ART

Organized by the Liverpool School of Art & Design and the FACT Centre Liverpool, the symposium entitled Art – Place - Technology, to be held in Liverpool, UK, on 30 March - 1 April 2006, will look at historical and current projects by some of the world's leading curators of new media art, and discuss how curating new media art creates interfaces with the art world, museum culture, media, publishing and academia. >>>

20.   AFRICA AND DIASPORA CONFERENCE

In collaboration with the South African National Commission for UNESCO, the South African National Department of Arts and Culture is organizing the Africa and Diaspora Conference on Cultural Diversity for Social Cohesion and Sustainable Development, to be held in Sun City, South Africa, on 1-5 April 2006, as a follow-up to various African initiatives regarding UNESCO's Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. >>>

21.   EUROPE FOR INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE

Organized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, this meeting is the peak of a series of meetings that have been held with a view to promoting the process of European construction and citizen integration, highlighting the role of culture. The central focus of this conference to be held in Granada, Spain on 27-28 April 2006, will be the dialogue between cultures within Europe and beyond, in accordance with the European Commission's project to make 2008 the Year of Intercultural Dialogue. >>>

22.   NATIONAL ARTS MARKETING PROJECT CONFERENCE

Scheduled for 29 April - 2 May 2006 in Los Angeles, the 2006 NAMP Conference will focus on strategies for earned income and audience development, highlighting strategies and tactics in branding, high-tech e-marketing, guerilla tactics on a budget, and researching diverse audiences. >>>

23.   CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE 21st CENTURY

Marking the 15th anniversary of the International Cultural Centre, this international meeting of renowned experts in the area of heritage conservation, preservation and management will take place in Cracow, Poland on 24-28 May 2006 under the subtitle of Opportunities and Challenges. >>>

24.   WORLD SUMMIT ON ARTS AND CULTURE

Bookings are now being taken for the World Summit on Arts and Culture, focusing on the theme of regeneration through arts and culture, and taking place in NewcastleGateshead, England, on 14-18 June 2006. Early bird discount rates are available through 31 March. >>>

25.   AN EXPEDITION TO EUROPEAN DIGITAL CULTURAL HERITAGE

This conference to be held in Salzburg, Austria on 21-22 June 2006 under the subtitle of Collecting, Connecting – and Conserving? is an event of the Austrian Presidency of the European Union targeting experts from cultural heritage institutions, public administrations, EU institutions and the economy. The International Cultural Research Network and the Faculty of Education at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki organize their 5th biennial conference, to take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 10-16 July 2006, aiming to promote greater cultural understanding and acceptance of differences. >>>

28.   WORLD DANCE DAY

On 29 April the World Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts. For that occasion, UNESCO's International Dance Council CID has put forward a list of suggestions for Dance Day preparations, available online. >>>

29.   EUCLID REVISED CULTURE.INFO ONLINE INFORMATION SERVICE

Following the pilot project and extensive market research and feedback, EUCLID has converted its Culture.Info database into an online portal providing easy access to a range of subportals focused on specific topics of interest to the cultural sector. >>>

New Books and Publications

30.   SOCIAL INNOVATIONS IN THE CULTURAL PROCESS

Under the title Social Innovations in Cultural Process: Strategies for the Development and Survival the proceedings from the 1st International Conference held in Samara, Russia, in December 2004 have been published by the Samara Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, aiming to review the effect of social innovation and globalization on cultural processes in a variety of fields. >>>

31.   ISTANBUL'S CULTURAL CONSTELLATION AND ITS EUROPEAN PROSPECTS

The author of this report commissioned by LabforCulture.org, Amsterdam-based cultural analyst Dragan Klaić, explores potential connections between Istanbul's cultural resources and structures and those elsewhere in Europe. An executive summary has been made available online. >>>
