News from the Culturelink Focal Point

1.   WORLD REPORT ON CULTURAL DIVERSITY

The work of the Advisory Committee of Experts for the UNESCO World Report on Cultural Diversity was recently launched at a meeting held at the UNESCO seat in Paris, France. The Committee is made up of 15 world experts, including Arjun Appadurai (India), Philippe Descola (France), Lourdes Arizpe (Mexico), Neville Alexander (South Africa). Culturelink Network is honoured that its director, Biserka Cvjeticanin (Croatia) is also member of this Committee, whose first meeting took place on 25-26 September 2006. As pointed out by Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, in his introductory address "the World Report will explore the manifold aspects and new forms of cultural diversity". Among other issues, the experts discussed new approaches to and challenges of cultural diversity, how intercultural dialogue contributed to the emergence of new forms of diversity, and what the agents and main vectors of cultural transfers and changes were. The report is planned to be issued on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity, on 21 May 2008. >>>

2.   TOURISM LEEDS MET PHD STUDENTSHIPS

Leeds Metropolitan University is currently recruiting 100 PhD students as part of its centenary celebrations, and the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change (CTCC), which recently moved to Leeds Met, is coordinating applications in tourism and responsible tourism. The closing date for applications is 27 October 2006. >>>

3.   ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN POPULAR CULTURE

The Department of Communications, Popular Culture and Film at Brock University, St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, invites applications for a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Popular Culture, effective 1 July 2007. Candidates with teaching and research interests are encouraged to apply by 1 November 2006 or until position is filled. >>>

4.   MEDIA ARTIST/EDUCATOR AT UCSD

University of California San Diego's Visual Arts Department seeks an artist/educator with expertise in digital video production and post production with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education in a broadly interdisciplinary arts department that includes studio, computing, media, art and media history, theory and criticism. Additional background in digital photography or film is welcome. Deadline for applications is 15 December 2006 or until position is filled. >>>

5.   AIMAC 2007 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ARTS AND CULTURAL MANAGEMENT

The organizers of the 9th International Conference on Arts and Cultural Management (AIMAC 2007), to be held in Valencia, Spain, on 8-11 July 2007, invite the submission of papers on any aspect of arts and cultural management addressing various sectors of the arts and cultural industries. The deadline for abstracts is 15 October 2006. >>>

6.   SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MULTICULTURAL DISCOURSES

The Institute of Discourse and Cultural Studies of the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China invites abstracts and panel proposals to the Second International Conference on Multicultural Discourses, to be held in Hangzhou on 13-15 April 2007, presenting a new and much needed direction in social science in general and discourse studies in particular. Submission deadline is 1 November 2006. >>>

7.   10th US/ICOMOS INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

Balancing Culture, Conservation and Economic Development: Heritage Tourism in and around the Pacific Rim is the title of the upcoming 10th US/ICOMOS International Symposium, to be held in San Francisco, California, USA, on 19-21 April 2007. Abstracts that discuss the basic themes of culture, conservation, and economics as related to heritage tourism within the Pacific Rim are invited by 15 November 2006. >>>

8.   A SOUL FOR EUROPE

The People Network, a Felix Meritis Foundation project, is engaged in identifying some 50 talented individuals to participate in the second 'A Soul for Europe' Conference, to be held in Berlin, Germany on 17-19 November. >>>

9.   SOCIAL CAPITAL FOUNDATION 2007 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Under the title of Social Capital and Interethnic Relationships: Multiethnicity - a Boon or a Bane?, the Third International Conference of the Social Capital Foundation will be held on 15-19 November 2007, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The organizers are inviting papers to be submitted for the conference by 1 October 2007. >>>

Organized biennially by the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) and widely acclaimed in the field of children's books promotion, the Noma Concours encourages up-and-coming illustrators in Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Arab States to submit applications by 31 October 2006. >>>

12.   EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN CULTURAL POLICIES

Oragnized in the framework of the European Dream programme, this one-day discussion entitled Changing Frames: An Impossible Comparison – European and American Cultural Policies, will compare cultural policies in Europe and the United States, focusing on some critical moments in the past 60 years and how differently they intersected with cultural policies. Curated by Corina Suteu and Joan Jeffri, it will be held on 10 October 2006 at Columbia University, New York, USA. Admission is free of charge. >>>

13.   TRAINING OF TRAINERS' SEMINAR

Within the framework of the G2CC - Gateway to Cultural Collaboration project funded by the European Commission, On-The-Move and ECUMEST are organizing new training of trainers' sessions for cultural organisers, producers, managers, artists and cultural management teachers/trainers, to be held in Bucharest, Romania, on 27 October 2006. >>>

14.   CREATIVE CLUSTERS 2006

Creative Clusters 2006, the leading global conference examining the growth of the creative economy and culture-led regeneration, will be held in NewcastleGateshead, UK, on 6-8 November 2006, aiming to show how creative techniques and strategies are being deployed to effect deep transformation of places, and to tackle some of the most intractable issues of our times. >>>

15.   FIFTH EUROAMERICAN CAMPUS

The 5th Euro American Campus on Cultural Cooperation will be held in Almada, Portugal, on 8-12 May 2007 under the general theme of Intercultural Dialogue. 17.   GOLDEN MASK INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL

The Golden Mask in Estonia international theatre festival, to be held in Tallinn, Estonia, on 14-19 November 2006, presents the best Russian drama, opera, ballet and puppetry productions of the previous season selected by a board of experts consisting of theatre critics, journalists and theatre managers. >>>

18.   CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN PERFORMING ARTS MARKET (CEEPAM)

The first Central and Eastern European Performing Arts Market (CEEPAM) is to be held in London, UK, on 21-22 November 2006, as part of the FEEAST festival, serving as an open platform, encouraging networking among culture professionals involved in producing and presenting international performing arts. >>>

20.   JOBS.CULTURE.INFO PORTAL GOES LIVE

The new jobs.culture.info portal is packed with details of arts and culture jobs in the UK and Ireland, as well as in other European countries, in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. >>>

21.   LAUNCHING OF MOBILE.HOME

MOBILE.HOME is a year-long project celebrating the European Year of Workers' Mobility 2006 that will look at successes and obstacles to the movement of arts and artists across European borders, as guaranteed by the European Union treaties. It will also look at the phenomenon of mobility from technical, philosophical and artistic perspectives. >>>

22.   ASIA-EUROPE CULTURAL EXCHANGE: EXPANDED INFORMATION RESOURCE

The CulturE-ASEF information system, a joint project of the Asia-Europe Foundation and Universes in Universe, has recently been expanded, now offering access to annotated links to cultural relations and exchange information among 13 Asian and 25 European countries. >>>

23.   CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT WEBSITE

As part of its Culture and Development programme funded by the European Commission, CulturCooperation e.V. has launched the bilingual Culture and Development website, taking a look at the artistic and cultural potential in the development context and giving an overview of initiatives and projects working on culture and development. >>>

24.   KADMUSARTS.COM ONLINE

Serving as resource and social network for festivals, audiences, artists and cultural tourists, KadmusArts is the most comprehensive website for and about performing arts festivals worldwide with a current database of over 4,500 dance, theatre and music festivals. >>>

26.   AU CONFERENCE OF MINISTERS OF CULTURE DOCUMENTATION

28.   EUROPEAN CULTURAL POLICY MODELS

Published by the Instytut Europeistyki of the Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, this overview of the European cultural policies is a valuable addition to the contemporary research on comparative cultural policies.
