News from the Focal Point

1.   NEW ONLINE PUBLICATIONS

Following the continuous interest of users, two books previously published as paper editions in the Culturelink Joint Publications Series are now being made fully available online:
a) Dynamics of Communication: New Ways and New Actors, edited by Biserka Cvjetičanin, identifying the new tasks and changing roles of cultural policies related to cultural diversity and the newly emerging digital culture, and
b) The Creative City: Crossing Visions and New Realities in the Region, edited by Nada Švob-Đokić, analyzing the position of cities and their cultural role in Southeastern Europe.
The rapid shifts and changes provoked by the globalisation processes have brought over tremendous transformations in communication, culture and society in general. Both publications represent important contributions to the international debate analysing the consequences of globalization processes in the local contexts and the redefined roles of different actors involved in the cultural field. >>>

2.   16TH ICOMOS GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM

The 16th General Assembly and International Scientific Symposium of the International Council on Monuments and Sites will be held in Quebec, Canada, on 29 September - 4 October 2008 under the title The Spirit of Place Between the Intangible and the Tangible. The deadline for abstracts is 15 February 2008. >>>

3.   THIRD MEDITERRANEAN SOCIETY OF COMPARATIVE EDUCATION (MESCE) CONFERENCE

Papers are sought for the third conference of the Mediterranean Society of Comparative Education entitled Intercultural Dialogue Through Education, to take place in Qawra Malta from 11-13 May 2008. Deadline for abstracts is 26 February 2008. >>>

4.   13TH INTERNATIONAL METROPOLIS CONFERENCE

The 13th International Metropolis Conference will be held in Bonn, Germany on 27-31 October 2008 under the title Mobility, Integration and Development in a Globalised World. Deadline for the submission of workshop proposals is 28 February 2008. >>>

5.   SLOVO CALL FOR PAPERS

Slovo, the inter-disciplinary journal of Russian, Eurasian and East European affairs published by postgraduates of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies calls for 6,000 – 7,000 words papers for Volume 20.2 (Autumn 2008) to be submitted by 14 March 2008. >>>

6.   CIVILIZATIONS IN THE AMERICAS AND AROUND THE WORLD

The International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations (ISCSC) calls for participation at its 48th world conference on Civilizations in the Americas and Around the World: Past, Present and Future: Exploring Multiculturalism in Globalizing Civilizations, to be held in New Brunswick, Canada, on 26-28 June 2008. Abstracts deadline is 20 April 2008. >>>

7.   22ND WORLD CONGRESS ON DANCE RESEARCH

Organized by the Dora Stratou Dance Theater and the Greek Section IOFA, in collaboration with the International Dance Council CID, the 22nd World Congress on Dance Research will be held in Athens, Greece, on 2-6 July 2008. Presentations deadline is 30 May 2008. >>>

8.   SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS' MFA COMPUTER ART

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) now accepts applications to its graduate MFA Computer Art programme for Academic Year 2008-2009. Application deadline is 1 February 2008. >>>

9.   NAGIB FESTIVAL OF EXPERIMENTAL MOVEMENT

The fourth international festival of experimental movement NagiB, organized by Pekarna - Magdalena Network, to take place from 2 -6 September 2008 in Maribor, Slovenia, invites young emerging authors from the field of contemporary dance and performance to present their work. Proposals deadline is 5 February 2008. >>>

10.   ICOM-CC TRIENNIAL MEETING BURSARIES

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) offers a limited number of bursaries to museum and/or conservation professionals to attend the 15th Triennial Conference of ICOM-CC on Diversity in Heritage Conservation - Tradition, Innovation and Participation, to be held in New Delhi, India, on 22-26 September 2008. Application deadline is 29 February 2008 >>>

11.   FINNISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS DOCTORAL PROGRAMME

The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts admits 2-4 new students to its 2008 programme leading to a Doctorate in Fine Arts. The application period runs from 1 January to 29 February 2008. >>>

12.   KONSTFACK'S MASTER'S PROGRAMME 2008/2009

Konstfack, the largest university college of arts, crafts and design in Sweden, offers a Master's Programme that leads to a Master's of Arts in Fine Art, Design or Crafts, fusing design, art, history, theory and criticism into compelling forms of inquiry based on studio work and practical experience. Application deadline is 1 March 2008. >>>

13.   2008 UNESCO ASIA-PACIFIC HERITAGE AWARDS FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE CONSERVATION

Entries are now being accepted for the 2008 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, recognizing the achievement of individuals and organizations within the private sector, and public-private initiatives, in successfully restoring structures of heritage value in the Asia-Pacific region. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2008. >>>

14.   DARTINGTON INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

The Dartington International Summer School welcomes enthusiastic amateurs, late-starters, complete beginners, leading professional artists and up-and-coming talent to a wide range of courses and lectures to take place in Devon, UK, between 26 July – 30 August 2008. The deadline for bursaries applications is 4 April 2008.>>>

15.   FINE ARTS AND DESIGN MASTERS PROGRAMMES

MaHKU, Graduate School for Visual Art and Design in Utrecht, The Netherlands, offers internationally acknowledged one-year Fine Art and Design masters programs designed for an international body of students. Application deadline is 30 April 2008. >>>

The Transart Institute announces a three-week summer residency for non-degree seeking artists, including workshops, seminars, critiques and lectures, and beginning in summer 2008. >>>

20.   MA ECONOMICS OF CULTURE

BAICR Sistema Cultura and the School of Economics of Rome-Tor Vergata University offer a 2007-2008 online master's course in Economics of Culture, designed for people interested in culture management at an international level. >>>

21.   INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AFRICAN CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT (ICACD2008)

The ICACD Conference, to be held in Accra, Ghana on 20 - 24 April 2008, seeks to draw global attention to African Arts, traditional and social institutions and how its potential can be harnessed for the development of the African continent and the world as a whole. >>>

22.   SOCIAL COHESION POLICIES IN CULTURALLY DIVERSE CITIES

The International Urban Development Association (INTA) is coorganizing this international conference to be held in Palermo, Italy, on 2-3 May 2008, discussing how public services should be made more effective in reducing perceptions of discrimination, employment inequalities and in reconciling cultural diversity with urban integration. >>>

The Government of Canada recently launched podcasts.culture.ca, a cultural podcast listing curated with the expertise of the National Arts Centre, bringing together Canadian audio and video podcasts that reflect Canada's vibrant arts and culture scene. >>>

24.   PRAXIS NEWSLETTER

The ENCATC publishes Praxis, a members-only newsletter offering training opportunities for students in the cultural sector in Europe and beyond, aiming to promote mobility between countries, and facilitate lifelong learning. >>>

25.   IMPACT DATABASE ADDRESS CHANGE

The new address of the Impact Database, a bibliographical resource containing research on the social and economic effects of the arts, culture and major events hosted by the Centre for Cultural Policy Research (CCPR) at the University of Glasgow, is http://www.impact.arts.gla.ac.uk/. >>>

26.   WORLD SCRIPT MUSEUM

Balkanmedia initiated the idea for a World Script Museum, which will collect and exhibit the multitude of alphabets, written signs and cultures from all over the world in one place. Preparatory work is planned to begin in 2008 and the museum is expected to open its doors in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2011. >>>

27.   ACP CULTURAL INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME

The European Consultants Organisation (ECO), a provider of high-quality, professional technical assistance and consulting services to a wide range of public and private organisations, has been chosen to assist the ACP Secretariat in setting up and managing a Cultural Industries Assistance Programme forACP Countries. >>>

The Creative Cities Network, aiming to help unlock the creative, social and economic potential of cultural industries, invites cities to join one of its seven thematic networks according to their preference for a specific creative industry sector. >>>
