News from the Focal Point

1.   INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE AND DIGITAL CULTURE

The Culturelink Network has published the final report of its international round table entitled Intercultural Dialogue and Digital Culture, which was held in Zagreb, Croatia, on 20-21 November 2008. The event gathered over forty participants – cultural researchers, cultural policy experts, representatives from cultural networks, and cultural and new media practitioners from the EU, the Mediterranean and South East Europe, which discussed pertinent issues of possibilities that digital culture provides for intercultural dialogue. It was organized by the Institute for International Relations (IMO) and Culturelink Network from Zagreb, Croatia, with the support of UNESCO-BRESCE, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and the Department for Culture Education and Sports of the City of Zagreb. www.culturelink.org/conf/dialogue/dialoguerpt.html

The International Federation for Choral Music announces two new training opportunities for young event and arts managers in the field of choral music. Deadline for applications are 15 December 2008 (International Study Tour for Arts Managers) and 15 March 2009 (Youth Event Management Programme). >>>

7.   REDEFINING MODERSNISM AND POSTMODERNISM

The 12th international conference on cultural studies entitled Redefining Modernism and Postmodernism is to take place in Izmir, Turkey, from 29 April - 1 May 2009. Abstracts of papers are invited on aspects of modernity, modernism, and postmodernism from the literary, cultural, and a wide range of interdisciplinary aspects, aiming to broaden the current debates. Deadline for abstract submission is 19 December 2008. >>>

8.   CULTURE, TERRITORIES AND SOCIETY IN EUROPE

The French Observatory of Cultural Policies is organizing a European Syposium on Culture, Territories and Society in Europe, to be held in Grenoble, France, on 28-29 May 2009. Proposals for papers are invited by 31 January 2009. >>>

9.   U40-WORLD FORUM

As a pre-conference to the Conference of Parties of the 2005 - UNESCO Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression, the U40-World Forum, the main part of the U40-Capacity Building Programme 'Cultural Diversity 2030' (2008- 2010) initiated by the German Commission for UNESCO, to be held in Paris, France on 12-14 June 2009, is seeking up to 40 young specialists. Deadline for submissions is 28 February 2009. >>>

10.   CELEBRATING ARTS & CULTURE III

The Central European Foundation (CEF) announces its third call for proposals to support projects in arts and culture in Slovakia (SR) and the Central European (CE) region. The goal of the programme is to support projects that focus on developing artistic works, events and performances, and presenting them to the widest possible audience. Deadline for proposals is 15 December 2008. >>>

11.   XIV BIENNALE OF YOUNG ARTISTS FROM EUROPE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN

The city of Skopje, Macedonia, will host the XIV edition of the Biennale Skopje 2009, the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, from 3-12 September 2009. The selection is open to all young artists from 18 to 30 years of age (for the Show Area the age limit is 35 for directors and choreographers). The submission deadline is 15 January 2009. >>>

12.   INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF VISUAL ARTS AND NEW MEDIAS

The Center of Visual, Electronic Arts & Multimedia, will organize the 2nd edition of the International Festival of Visual Arts and New Medias (FAN) from 30 March to 4 April 2009 in Casablanca, Morocco. Professional artists and young creators in visual arts and new media wishing to participate in FAN 2009, should send a DVD copy of their work with a CV and technical information by 15 January 2009. >>>

13.   CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND EDUCATION IN CULTURAL LIFE

ENCATC is inviting proposals for presentations and chairing of sessions at their forthcoming international conference entitled Creative Entrepreneurship and Education in Cultural Life, that will take place at the Columbia College in Chicago, USA, on 15-18 July 2009. >>>

LabforCulture has gone Italian! Two years after launching LabforCulture is now adding an Italian language version to the site. This will make the site more accessible to a wider part of the Italian community, expanding the site to 6 languages. >>>

19.   PUTTING CULTURE FIRST – RESEARCH REPORT BY COMMONWEALTH FOUNDATION

In March 2008, the Commonwealth Foundation's Culture and Diversity Programme launched a major research project into culture, cultural policy and development, called Putting Culture First. The report is now available both in electronic version and hard copy. >>>
