From the Focal Point |

Congratulations, Nina! We are happy to announce that Nina Obuljen Korzinek, Culturelink Team member and IRMO research fellow, has been appointed Minister of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. Her qualifications and professionalism, her education and experience, the knowledge and understanding of the cultural sector indicate that she will know how to respond to the expectations of Croatian artists, cultural practitioners, institutions and associations. Openness towards new phenomena, a comprehension that the most successful reforms in culture have always come "from the bottom", and a commitment to building confiance among partners in culture, all these values permeate both her scientific work and her cultural practice. One of Nina's main research issues is concerned with the unequal and unbalanced exchange of cultural goods and services around the world. She was an active participant in the creation of the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Together with Dutch expert Joost Smiers, Nina edited an important book on this topic: UNESCO's Convention - Making It Work, published in the Culturelink Joint Publications Series (2006). In this book, she points out that the measure of success of the Convention down the road will depend on how effectively this tool will have been wielded by those favouring cultural diversity. Nina has always stressed that it is important to build new partnerships between diverse civil society movements and governments, as well as to strongly continue the research and analysis of different developments in the field of culture. For Nina, it is essential to be able to respond appropriately to all challenges, including those arising from technological developments or political decisions, which might have a direct impact on culture, cultural policy and cultural diversity. During the gala dinner at the 7th World Summit on Arts and Culture, held in Malta between 18 and 21 October 2016, as Programme Director of the Summit Nina stated that two years ago, when the decision on the theme of the Summit on cultural leadership was made, she could not have anticipated that during the Summit she herself would actually become a cultural leader in her own right in her home country. We expect Nina to work on new cultural partnerships and face challenges such as the remodelling of cultural policy, ever more visible cultural diversities, technological changes, etc. There are so many problems in culture, the cultural sector is in need of a reform - we wish Nina a lot of success on this road!
