Capitals of Culture: An Introductory Survey of a Worldwide Activity
By Steve Green, A Prasino report, October 2017, 83 pages
Whilst the European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) programme has generated a substantial library of evaluations, theses, reports, articles commentaries etc., very little has been written about the other programmes. The paper Capitals of Culture: An Introductory Survey of a Worldwide Activity, written by Steve Green, a former chair of the selection panel for the European Capitals of Culture (including for Rijeka 2020), gives an introduction to the Capitals and Cities of Culture programmes around the world. This paper is an introductory survey of 31 titles. Some have closed, but in 2017 there are 23 cities around the world with a Capital of Culture title. They join over 300 cities which have held titles since 1985 and over 50 cities are already designated to hold titles to 2025. According to Steve Green, this paper just outlines the programmes and shows that more information and research is needed on the Capitals of Culture programmes around the world. Thus, the author welcomes more information on titles (except ECOC) and will keep the paper up to date.
